Won't recognize me even though I'm logged in

by Sandy (Curate)
on Nov 27, 2003 at 14:59 UTC ( [id://310548]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Hi, I am a new user (Sandy). I've posted a couple of threads, and it always puts those posts as anonymous, even though I logged in (numerous times!)

Help.

Sandy

PS: If this particular message actually is not anonymous, then I will look foolish, won't I?

Do yourself a favor and change your theme. Pick something that does not look like the default, which is the chosen theme for Anonymous Monks. It is very possible that you thought you were logged in and you weren't. Also, logging into perlmonks.org is not the same as logging into www.perlmonks.org ... pick one and keep it consistent.

And, of course, the important thing is that hopefully you had your problems answered, regardless of which User Hat you wearing at the time. Best of luck to you. :)

Hi Sandy and welcome. I have seen this problem, you're not alone. Would you by any chance be using IE on a Macintosh?

A few weeks ago I was on holiday, and at one point I managed to scam some time at a friend's house who has a Mac and IE installed. I noticed that there was no way to get IE to save the cookie. Each time I tried to log in to PM, it would keep coming back as having me logged out.

I finally found that if I just logged in without asking for a cookie (don't check the checkbox next to the password field), it worked for as long as I kept the browser window (read: session) open, which, when it comes down to it, was just what I wanted, given the circumstances.

I have no idea whether it is a bug or a (security(?)) feature of IE interacting weirdly with PM, but there you have it. Does this sound like your environment? Maybe it's time to install the lizard. At least just trying a different browser might help determine where the problem lies.

Also, welcome Sandy. As to grinder's point, I'm using IE on Mac 10.x and have no problems on any of the machines I access the Monastery with. Remember, we're dealing with computers here, or more accurately, browsers :-)

As to the rest of PM, just jump in, the water's fine.

On XP/IE, I've randomly lost my cookies several times. I can't seem to reproduce the problem, and I was hoping to have more information before I reported it.

I use MacOS 9.2 and have never had a problem with IE and saving cookies (I had 8.6 before that and no problem either). You can control cookie acceptance by using Edit/Preferences and selecting Receiving Files/cookies, and also view the cookies on your system.

You were logged in when posting this message, but have you considered that your browser might not have accepted Cookies before this time?

Welcome to the monastery Sandy. You may find it helpful to adust your user settings to show a different color than the default. When I login successfully, my theme changes to a nice serene green. (Web Safe Green, to be exact)
