Hello All!!!

Today I encountered a generous lesson from my Fellow monks. I put out a post , which was to gain some understanding of a problem that I was trying to figure out. I had it working, but I wanted to know if this was really working the way that my mind had convinced itself that it worked!

Then a horrible thing happened, I started to get negative points for my question and I panic'd, and tried to remove my node (which as I gain PM wisdom), DOES NOT WORK. It seems that I was thought of as a child who took my ball and went home after the game did not go the way that I wanted it to go.

This was not at all my intention. I really wanted to save myself some embarrassment, and didn't want to waste others times with a 'stupid' post. Thank goodness for the ChatBox, cuz it along with some Fellow Monks gave me encouragement to put my node back out there. I did, and the day has turned around.

What could have gone from disasterous and fear-filled turned into a fantastic learning experience for me. Thanks to all who helped me and I am putting this out there so maybe help another 'newbie' like myself to not make the same assumption, cuz, reality speaking, no one is here to make anyone feel bad about coding. This site is for the advancement of perl and all of it's magic. I believed that in 2001 when I joined, and I found it to be true when I recently returned after an almost 5 year absense.

Thanks for keeping me in the database. I am glad to be back amongst friends.

peace, LOVE and ((code))

I haven't followed the node in question very closely, but there are some reasons for the downvotes (just educated guesses from my side):
    1. The title is absolutely meaningless. When you read it, you have no idea about the topic
    2. The code snippet doesn't run on its own, so it's hard to try it out
    3. The question is a very general one, and is hard to answer in a few short lines
    4. Your last sentence, Although, I have learned that this place is majorly competive and I am not one of the top monks ... sounds rather accusingly, and for no good reason

When you ask volunteers, you should make your best effort to make your question readable, unoffensive and in such a way that it can easily be answered.

As a reward you'll get both good answers and positive reputation.

If we have the feeling that you don't put effort into your questions, we feel abused, and sometimes react with downvotes and harsh answers.

--(meaningless titles) : note the pre decrement operation (same as "shoot first, ask questions later").
Thanks for this advice. I did not mean to sound accusingly or anything of the sort. Thanks for keeping me in my humble spot. I am learning and there are so many more who are above me in knowledge.

I just went though a very simmilar situaton, on my first post, nonetheless. I took offense to a comment another user made on my question, though I came to realize that had I been in the shoes of ikegami, I would have responded to my code the same way, it was an eyesore and needed the criticism. Maybe it was because of the stressful day I'd had, but it was still no excuse for me to lash out, and my sudden drop in XP was definitely warrented. Like you said, basicdez, no one is here to make me feel bad about coding, and the insight provided by more battle hardened veterans is invaluable to newbies like myself. Hopefully someday I can be the one to give advice, and until then, I'll be sure not to take anything too personally and absorb as much as I can. I'm very grateful to be part of a like-minded community of perl coders.

Thank you for helping me see the light,

Thanks for putting this out here. It is good to read such a heart-filled response. Keep up the good work, and remember when all else fails - CODE - makes it all better.
