Perl seems well suited to bioinformatics judging by BioPerl, and given there's an O'Reilly book, Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics, dedicated to the subject. From a number of recent posts I've noticed on use.perl.org, the bioperl community remains active today:

Of course, many other languages and tools (e.g. Open Bioinformatics Foundation and BioPython) are also well-suited to this domain.
