Should PM have a Puzzles Corner?

by tlm (Prior)
on May 16, 2005 at 01:10 UTC ( [id://457320]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Recent nodes such as Python challenge -> Perl, Perl Online Tutorial/Quizes, and games played with Perl tell me that there is a demand for something like a Puzzles Corner in PM. I know that many forums make the mistake of creating an excess of subforums that get little or no traffic, but I think this one would take off. This would be the place to post interesting puzzles to solve using Perl, including the "challenges" that are now posted elsewhere. (Hopefully these would move to challenges other than golf. Nothing against golf, but it would be nice to expand the world of Perl puzzles in novel directions. Besides, Perl golfers already have their fairways.)

Adding another section to fight over what goes where doesn't appeal to me. Poetry and Obfuscation should be merged into a single section that encompasses those, golf, puzzles, etc.

      Trivial Pursuits

...except that people who know of the game by the same name might mistake it for a section dedicated to the discussion of Perl trivia; Larry-isms, little known developments, and so on.

tye is on the right track though. The first thing I thought when I saw the parent node was, "Obfuscation and Puzzlers", but that wouldn't implicitly invite the Perl Poets' participation. In principle it makes a whole lot of sense to combine Obfu, Poetry, Golf, and Puzzlers into one section, but unless you call it "Obfu, Poetry, Golf, and Puzzlers", the section will probably fail to attract all such posts.

Named "Edutainment"? "The Lighter Side"? Can't think of a Monestary-related term.

I think "The Heap" is closer what tye has in mind... ;-)

I can see the affinity between obfus/japhs and puzzles, but poems and puzzles seem like an odd mix to me.

Brewery? Monks used it because they often didn't have a good water supply, but it was probably fun for them too.

        Diversions?

        Game Room?

        Rumpus Room?

        Luditorium?1

1I kind of made that one up, but surprisingly Google turns up a few hits, including one that describes it as a "posh word for 'Play Zone'".

      Perhaps
Cloister - an open area, often grassed, sometimes with a fountain in the centre
      or
      Calefactory - a warming room

both these would seem to be places that would allow loitering and idle chat.

There's MJD's perl qotw, but it's not working well because there're not enough volunteers to actually create the puzzles and evaluate the solutions.

I don't think it would be necessary to have volunteers to evaluate the solutions, any more than we have volunteers now to evaluate golf entries or anything else.

Whether puzzles would be submitted frequently enough is a harder question. You may be right that there may not be enough of them to warrant a separate section, which argues in favor of tye's consolidation idea.

A puzzles section would be fun, I think - and should definitely be separate from poetry and obfuscation. Golf could go in the puzzles section as well, since its purpose is to figure out the shortest possible solution, not be as confusing as possible. The two don't always correspond.

    Hi,

personally I think it would be a good idea. Theres oft times when finished with my daily scriptures that I like to play with perl to try and learn something new. Obviously I can read through the normal posts but sometimes it's a bit to much like work :-(
Fun diversion's would be nice and inspirational and collected together would suit my tired (read lazy) head :-)
