That idea struck me from behind. merlyn claims to be a good singer and the Perl Monks are highly creative.
I envision an album of covered songs with alternative, geekish lyrics, of which a bad example might be:
If I were a spammer
I'd spam them in the morning
I'd spam them in the evening
All over the web
I'd spam them from my laptop
I'd spam them from my palm
I'd spam them from evry computer I can get
All over the web
Peter, Paul & Mary (If I had a hammer)
Skilled fellow brothers could create the lyrics, some monk with appropriate hardware produce it and
merlyn sings (if he wants).
Then the songs can be made available for download at a music site. The money from that goes, of course, directly
to the Offering Plate.
I'm sure there are some legal tripwires (that I don't know about). But even if these tripwires will make it impossible
to produce the album, the assembling of the lyrics will be funny.
Thoughts?

Well, our dev department has a guitarist, a bassist and a singer. If you know a Perlhead drummer, please send them our way (seriously - we're hiring right now in Santa Monica :). Then we could make a Perl band a reality.
I already have the lyrics for the first verse of the first song ('pink slip': a song about a guy who ignores the following and ends up wearing a dress - or something like that :):
use strict, use warnings,
taint check, turn it on,
never trust, user input
do this and you can't go wrong.

lol
I wouldn't dream of forcing that option :)
Coincidentally, Pearl St in Santa Monica is roughly the same distance from my house as it is from tilly's.
I'm actually convinced that Santa Monica is one of the geekiest towns in the US. I mean, we have Pearl (OK, they read the "and" as non-silent, but so what :) We also have Pico Blvd (great editor), Pine St (great shell mail client :) and Raymond Ave (Ahh, Eric).

I was hanging around the Chatterbox when holli floated this idea, and I regretfully admitted it was right up my alley. With apologies to the Rolling Stones, I respectfully submit the following as a sample of the cringe-inducing parodies I can provide for such a project. It's a first draft, so there are likely a few bugs in here ;^)
Rolling Stones
Waiting On A Friend
Watching zombies piling up
It ain't the latest thing
I'm just looping in a &REAPER
I'm just trying to make some sense
Out of the exit codes from wait()
The tales they tell of kids
I'm not waiting on a process
I'm just waiting on a PID
A PID relieves -1 causes grief
Remember what I said
I'm not waiting on a process
I'm just waiting on a PID
I'm just waiting on a PID
Don't need backticks
Don't need no exec()
Don't need a system call
But I need POSIX happy forking
I need a working $SIG{CHLD}
Making kids and waiting pids
It is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a process
I'm just waiting on a PID
Next up (provided this doesn't result in my monk status being revoked) is a "Sweet Child of Mine" knock-off.

While contributions are always welcome, perlmonks.org does not presently have expenses. Our hosting is donated by the wonderful Pair, and our administration is done by volunteers. So I'd recommend donating to the Yet Another Society general fund, who I am sure can find a good home for it.

Well, I actually like your 'If I had a hammer' version :-P.
Here's one from my all-time favorite band (and one of my all-time favorite songs):
Still coding after all these years
I met my old lover on PM last night
He seemed so glad to see me, I just smiled
And we talked about some old bugs
And we drank ourselves some beers
Still coding after all these years
I'm not the kind of geek who tends to OOP
I seem to lean on procedural style
And I ain't no fool for Perl poems that whisper in my ears
Still coding after all these years
Still coding after all these years
Four in the morning, I'm tapped out and yawning
Longing my script away
I never worry, why should I?
It's all gonna crash
Now I scroll in Vim and I watch the lines go by
I fear I'll lose my Camel one fine day
But I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers
Still coding after all these years
Still coding
Still coding
Still coding after all these years
Simon and Garfunkel - Still crazy after all these years
