In a different vein, there's a really excellent book out about programming in general -- it doesn't tell you DO IT THIS WAY but rather gives you guidelines about thinking about practical (rather than academic) programming. Check out The Pragmatic Programmer for info and some extracts. Bonus: It's broken into discrete, fairly short sections: a perfect bathroom book!
