Building Dynamic Web Pages with CPAN-Modules

knoebi has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Monks,

i was searching arround for a comparison of the CPAN Modules for building Dynamic Web Pages. I founded some small pages, but most of them were just simple Listings. What do you think about something like poop.sourceforge.net ? Is there allready something out there like this? Or even a node here?

I think this would be really helpful and important for the perl community, because when you're new to perl there are just too many Modules to check-out and often you choose the wrong one first.

I think what also would be really helpful are Categories (like Model, View, Controller or mod_perl/CGI/Other and some standard explanation which should help beginners to decide for the right solution for them.

If there isn't anything setup like this yet, i would be happy about some suggestions for the categories, then i would set this up and add all the modules i can remember.

There are several such comparisons posted around the Monastary; searching for "template" will find a good number of them, including this, this, this and this... SuperSearch should find you even more. As far as I know, there's not a single authoritative reference for all of them; all such listings are incomplete and rapidly become out-of-date. (For what it's worth, I'm personally a big fan of HTML::Mason.)	[reply]

I also think that the biggest problem whit such a list is that it become rapidly out-of-date. Thats why I don't plan to read all the corresponding websites of the modules and put the features on a new page (I won't update it anyway in a month or so..) but to provide a site where the authors (or other interested people) can enter their moduls in a structured way so we can compare them. First i will start with the MVC or other Frameworks (own interest, also there is allready alot out there about template systems and db wrappers). except the allready mentioned Mason and Apache::PageKit i also thought about OpenInteract, Interchange, Maypole, Embperl, CGI::Application and CGI::Builder. Any others? For complete perl based CMS I found this node.	[reply]

Please consider, that CMS, Template System and Framework are very different things. Also there are alreay pages for this. Apache::PageKit is a mature MVC mod_perl solution. It works with perl 5.6.x through perl 5.8.x with Apache 1.x or 2.x and mod_perl 1.3 as well as mod_perl 2. http://www.pagekit.org/ for more info. http://pagekit.org/guide/index.html for the guide. Boris	[reply]
