I tried your test program with perl 5.8.0 on two different platforms (neither Linux). Both worked fine--I could not reproduce the bug. Make sure that you don't have an old version of 'fields.pm' in your @INC path. When I do this: perl -Mfields -le 'print $fields::VERSION'
I get 1.02.
You can search for known bugs at bugs.perl.org. You can report one using the "perlbug" program that comes with perl.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
