in reply to Googlish approach to voting/XP?

1. I believe this is a bit dangerous. For instance, a group of individuals (read: thugs) could get together and start referring to a number of each others' posts within their sig and use the tactic of repeating what is said in threads (as I've noticed some people do...not by a few minutes, but by a few hours).

2. I don't think the saints here walk on water. They need floaties like the rest of us. Nodes are voted upon by the inhabitants of the monastery. To say someone's opinion of a node is more worthwhile than another's just seems uncharacteristic of our community.

Furthermore, I'd like to say a few things. XP means nothing. It has taken me a while to recognize this. Just because you've XP-whored your way into sainthood doesn't mean you're as capable as tye, jeffa, Ovid, merlyn, tilly, Abigail-II, or any of the other valuable members of our community (trust me, I'd list you all if I could). If you've reached sainthood without ever paying attention to what's going on here at the monastery, then you've lost a great opportunity. The most valuable thing that PM offers isn't a symbol of status (I don't know of anyone who puts that they are a saint at PM on their resume). The most valuable thing about PM is the ability to learn from your peers. These are the people who do what you do. They enjoy the same thing you do. They've run into problems that you run into on a daily basis. They are experienced, knowledgeable, ready and, most importantly, willing to see you through your problems. XP is just a hook to attempt to get people to participate. Our hope is that at some point, they realize what is the true value of being here.

Hope this helps.

If I received a CV that included Saint on Perl Monks or anything similar, it would move the person up the pile for sure.

I was sitting with a friend who runs a marketing agency when he noticed my high streak on Duolingo and took a picture. He later posted it on LinkedIn saying that anyone with the discipline to practice anything daily for 6 years deserves to be given an ear if and when they look for a job...not that I am looking for a job...

    Edit: corrected spelling

If I received a CV that included Saint on Perl Monks or anything similar, it would move the person up the pile for sure.

But if you know what being a Saint on Perlmonks means, you would not work in HR. The sad fact is that HR people often don't have any clue about the business they work for, especially in larger companies.

I work in a small company, and even there, nobody except me has any clue what being a Perlmonks Saint means. I use Perl for automating stuff while building our software, and while the other developers can surely edit the mostly small scripts, nobody would write new Perl code. They lack the deeper understanding of the Perl culture. It's more like "Bambam hungry. Bambam hunts oink oink. Bambam eats oink oink. Bambam happy." No traces of Shakespeare, Jagger–Richards, or Lennon–McCartney, not even Kelly Bundy.

But if you know what being a Saint on Perlmonks means, you would not work in HR

My company is not large enough to have an HR department so I decide who we hire and who we don't, usually with input from others.

Not having an HR person can be a bind, but mostly, it is a big relief...I'm not looking forward to the day that I delegate recruitment to someone else but that day will come if we are going to achieve our growth targets - *SiGH*

      Careful! x3

      • You can easily become a saint without many meaningful posts, just by constant aggressive voting.
      • Some of the worst (and dumbest) trolls here had pretty high ranking
      • Duolingo is a trap. The primary aim of the Gamification is to make people addicted and an easy target for their ads. The content is automatically generated and not very didactic.

Traditionally, this has not been the case. Real people put together the courses to produce quality learning. IMHO, there is a deeper issue with Duolingo. It teaches one to translate, not to understand the target language. Duolingo is great for getting started with a language but, in the absence of speaking with fluent speakers, other apps are needed to attempt to become fluent. That's why I use Rosetta Stone daily - it teaches only using the target language.

It's probably happened before - I'd do it for fun if I were a saint.

Mind you're listening to somebody who updated his CV to include the phrase "Decorative around the office". shortly before landing my current job!

I'd like to think that's because it's true, but maybe it was because they thought I had a sense of humour, or some entirely different reason ...
