Although in the example shown here split would be fine, the fields in these types of file (PDB) are not always defined (e.g. sometimes the chain is blank) so substr or unpack is preferable. See the PDB documentation for more info http://www.wwpdb.org/documentation/format33/sect9.html#ATOM
