It would be great to have a "printer friendly" view of some of the answered questions...kinda like news web sites have...

    While I'd like the existence of a built-in printer view as well, there is the workaround provided by blakem outlined in this node and implemented on http://perlmonks.thepen.com/. His page caters to search engines, but mostly, it just has the right sidebar removed, which makes the pages (more) suitable for printing than the "original" pages here. I don't know how stylesheets would affect his pages, but maybe you could craft a stylesheet and apply it to his pages to get a perfect print page.

    perl -MHTTP::Daemon -MHTTP::Response -MLWP::Simple -e ' ; # The $d = new HTTP::Daemon and fork and getprint $d->url and exit;#spider ($c = $d->accept())->get_request(); $c->send_response( new #in the HTTP::Response(200,$_,$_,qq(Just another Perl hacker\n))); ' # web

    The major advantage is that if you 'bookmark' a node in your personal nodelet you will have any additional answers available the next time you come back to that node. If you print it on paper, you will have what you've once printed but no additions that have been entered after you printed it.
    I suppose it could be set up in a way that the printer-friendly option could be used more than once per node/thread.   ;-)

    But seriously, I have wished for this option on occasion. Perhaps someone will come up with a nifty CSS solution as particle suggests.

    Update: You can (to a limited extent) append the  &displaytype=raw attribute to the URI of some areas of the Monastery and eliminate the banners and nodelet bar as mentioned by Corion. For details as to where it will work, check out DisplayType Raw by footpad.

    The Internet is not for printers.

    Anyway, I see the point. Many web sites, including the Monastery are not optimal for printing.

    I guess you'd like to keep some sort of printed 'library' of 'nifty things' for future reference.

    Have you tried using the Personal Nodelet? It lets you create your personal 'bookmarks' to the Monastery. The major advantage is that if you 'bookmark' a node in your personal nodelet you will have any additional answers available the next time you come back to that node. If you print it on paper, you will have what you've once printed but no additions that have been entered after you printed it.

    Everything will go worng!

      The Internet is not for printers.

      i disagree. the internet is for browsers, printers, pdas, televisions, telephones, toasters, soda machines, and fish bowls. i believe the site should be more accessible for alternate browsing, including print. i think the site cleanup effort currently underway will allow stylesheets that make printing friendlier.

      all that being said, i've never printed a page from this site. i've bookmarked links, used the personal nodelet, and used SuperSearch.
