In /dev/null, duh! Not had an information leak since I implemented that policy (but if someone could tell me my bank card PIN, I'd be eternally grateful).

In ~/README.txt. As noone ever reads manuals or README's, it is probably the safest place :)

I used to have a lowered ceiling in the bathroom (old house, so I can confess now) with a tiny space that could fit a floppy disk perfectly. Very well suited for my GPG private key :-)

I have a boring old board game we never use and that has a large box with a shaped plastic thingy to hold the parts in place. As that plastic thing is difficult to remove from the cardboard box, you don't normally need to remove it even if you want to play a game, and there's much room under it, it's an ideal place to hide secret things.

I personally believe I should be ashamed (but I'm not!) to confess I used such a device to hold my porn magazines, as a teenager. That was before the whole web thingy. Guys nowadays don't know what that means anymore!

By my side, just into an unencrypted pendrive...and anyway I don't mind to make them secret or not. Nowadays it's better to keep your secrets on your mind, so nobody will really find them ;)

The human mind is a very complex and strange machine...

I keep loosing mine...wouldn't be a good place for me to put my secrets...except those that I don't want to remember!

Reminds me of a Dilbert cartoon. Dilbert goes to the 'Archiving Dept' and hands him a document and says "This needs to be stored for 7 years.". The clerk says "OK". Then you see the clerk taking the document and throwing it in the dumpster saying, "This job got easy after I figured out no one every requests document back".

This reminds me a lot of that cartoon. Here I am saving documents that I consider important, but chances are, I am never going to look at them again because I forgot what they are and why they are important.

I just remember important passwords. I don't have anything else that would worth the status "secret" :) Just wondering... I am a unix guy, but why aren't some windows directories in the list? like system32 ot something :)
why aren't some windows directories in the list? like system32...

How could I be expected to remember that I'd placed the secret stuff in a directory named "system32" ? No thanks .... I'll stick with "secret" ;-)

      Cheers,
      Rob

    Simple and platform independent:
    # Write vim passwords.txt gpg --symmetric --force-mdc -o passwords.gpg passwords.txt shred -u passwords.txt # Read gpg -d passwords.gpg | less # Profit!
Then add Logfile::Rotate to keep history of it all.

I keep them in the USB drive built in my wrist watch, which I have with me 98% of the time. Its only 512 MB but big enough to store some secret files, for the stuff that is not that secret I keep it in my encrypted /home dir.

Truecrypt is an excellent way to store secret information. Using the hidden option + an innocuous file name + a key file + two layers of encryption should make those secrets really hard to find, and really hard to extract if found.

I'm something of a packrat. Especially when it comes to information.

So anyway, I figure the best place to store secret files is right in amidst everything else. The only way anybody's going to *find* any of it is if they specifically *grep* for certain things, because it's way too much information for anybody to bother sifting through in its entirety. And if they're going to grep for certain things, they'd have to already know what they're looking for, in which case, the secrets would already be most of the way compromised, wouldn't they?

if running windoze, you can use "Free Hide Folder". After placing your all important files in a directory you can hide it from the O/S and any lurking thieves or spies... it is still possible to view and retrieve your information in this hidden state, however this won't be possible for your average user or even just any advanced user... unix....permissions, permissions, shadow mounts, special characters, etc...

If the information is so secret; then I will not forget that information. So why create a file on computer.
The fact is that such secret things will be very few.
If I don't organize my thoughts that way, then I am a stupid. Sometimes I am.. ;-)
