I chose "I can't imagine doing that" and then remembered I have one entry on use Perl;. (Is use Perl; a blog?)

Still, "I can't imagine doing that" seemed the most appropriate choice. I have some writer friends who like to get together every couple of weeks and critique each other's work, offer suggestions, brainstorm, etc., and one of them opined that we should post our work to a blog (presumably to somehow further the agenda of our physical meets). And my reaction was, then, pretty much: "I can't imagine doing that."

http://use.perl.org/ has user journals which are certainly blogs, IMO. It also has non-journals which form a forum and are not blogs. I'm baffled by the previous claims that slashdot is a blog. Note that the previous poll said "blog / web journal" to help clarify what was meant by "blog".

Nearly every "blog" I've seen was a series of items written by the same one person with no one theme overpowering the "theme" of authorship. Not that I claim to have seen a large percentage of the blogs in existance, but I've seen no small number of blogs and the vast majority were "personal". The proliferation of tools to help people publish their own blog has lead to people using such tools for non-journals or at least not-personal journals. But I consider such to be "using blogging tools" for non-blogging (such as publishing a bnewsletter).

So I don't broaden the term "blog" to cover all manner of web sites with dated articles, because that'd make "blog" a relatively useless term. I stick by (near as I can tell) the original meaning where I think the single-author aspect was an important part of the definition. I'm quite sure the rest of the world won't keep "blog" narrowly defined (and thus useful), however. :)

You're perfectly right. Though most modern blogs although very differing each other in their visual appearance, also have something in common that makes them recognizable at a glance. For example, even Gmane now offers a blog-like web inferface, which some people may be more comfortable with.

The older I get the less I feel compelled to say. At this rate, I'll be practically mute in another five years. And there will be great rejoicing and merriment around the globe!

There is plenty of software out there that will allow you to quickly enter in text, format it, edit it, tag it, etc. The trouble is that I like to think about what I am going to say first. I spend time thinking how to say what I want clearly and succintly often to no avail. That takes time.

Perhaps I don't have the proper mindset for blogging.

I get lost in trying to say what I want to say when I have to type it. What I write/type never looks/sounds right to me. I have plenty to say, but am not sure of the value of any of it. My grandmother used to ask: ".. a hundred years from now, will anyone know the difference?". If I wrote things down, perhaps ... but that may not be a good thing. There is something about NOT sharing my thoughts that I find advantageous.

Other than that, blogs are like white noise, except blogs make my eyes hurt. Also, most blogs are written like this post, unordered, random, and self-indulgent.

How can you manage to do that? I know some people keep a separate technical and personal blog; that does make sense. You may have other or more precise categories, but if you're not joking, 8 sounds like too much to me. Well, not too much as in "you shouldn't do it". Too much as in "wouldn't tags take care of categorization anyway?" (Once you've chosen a generically restricted enough category to begin with.) Well this assumes that tags are supported by your blogging system. But then AIUI most modern ones do.

OTOH does a use Perl; journal count as a blog? If so, then I blog too. If not, then I've given the wrong answer. But then I've given the wrong answer in any case, since I've not been writing in it anything for months, and then I've started writing in it on a daily basis (or more!) again just the last few days. So is that "often" or "infrequently"?

I have a generic non-sense personal blog (in Portuguese), which is my main blog about my life.

I have a generic technical personal blog (in Portuguese).

I have my use.perl journal.

I have a blog solely devoted to the bad translations one finds on Portuguese TV (in Portuguese, of course).

I have a blog solely devoted to pictures, where I post pictures of things that make absolutely no sense.

I have a blog where I complain about companies that give poor service (in Portuguese).

I have a blog where I just post poetry that I write (in Portuguese).

I have a blog just for Things for which I crave (which I haven't started to update properly).

Oh, and I also have a Portuguese jokes website that features four new jokes each day :-)

Others have suggested me to use tags and put everything in the same place, but I don't like mixing apples and oranges.

I did create some feeds that aggregate everything I write. They're available in my homepage.

Maybe one of these days I should create a blog about my obsession towards blogging... O:-)

Slightly over a year later and I'm now on 14 blogs... Plus Jaikus and the likes...

I need to change my answer. Since this poll came out, I've closed the old blog down, opened up two new blogs (here and here), and taken the "30 in 30" challenge. Thirty posts in thirty days. So far, I'm not only keeping up, but exceeding the goal. I'm actually blogging more on the blog where I didn't announce the challenge than on the one where I did. There's something to be said for forming a habit.
