(kudra: I'm so lazy) Re: Amount of MP3s I have at my home
by kudra (Vicar) on Nov 21, 2000 at 03:03 UTC
I was kind of suprised that the largest range was 'more than 10 gigs'...I think I've got around 33 or 34. Whenever I buy a new CD, I rip it even before adding it to my database.

Why? Because I'm lazy. I don't want to switch CDs 10 times an hour just to get the combination of songs I want to listen to while I'm coding. Nor do I want to carry the CDs between all the different rooms where I want to listen to music.

Heh. I cheated... I counted my husband's MP3 collection (I think he ripped most of a 200 CD collection), because, well, it's at my home, isn't it? :) I must confess though: my hearing is bad enough that I can't hear the difference between 256k and 96k, so most of mine are done at 96k.

I picked 10GB+ because I backup every mp3 I ever tap my hand on! Is it a dirty thing? I dont think so. When they will lower the prices, and I can see the musicians really get the money, I will buy more CDs. But no more explanation I just love music. :-)

I have ~4.5 gigs at work, but less than 100 megs at home. I rip them at work and then put winamp in shuffle mode on the entire directory tree. It keeps the mind stimulated by playing completely different songs back to back.

At home and the car I just listen to the CDs...

I think I'm the odd one out. Zero MP3s. Zilch. Nada. They just don't do anything for me. Go figure.

So, now all I have to do is get a CD changer that hooks to a box, and I can whip out some Perl to switch CDs and give me the flexability of MP3s. *grin*

...you might be eaten by a grue...

Nah, you're not the odd one out. I have as many as you *grin*

Haha, and you can develop an mp3 catalogizer app, tailored to your needs, and make some acrobatic hacking with perl :-). I think we exploited every relation between perl and mp3 with this! :-)

Anyway is there anybody who listen to electronic music? Long live Eat Static and the U.F.O. stuff :)

      I don't have any either :)

Although I checked "50-100 MB", it's funny that I have four, yes four .mp3 files on my hard drive. Gotta love that 256kbps encoding! (otherwise, might as well just get the CD)

I only have about 10-20 mp3s (60megs) of MP3s on my comp, i think its useless to have more than the songs u really like.

My MP3 CD-Rs are at work where they are more useful. :)

I think in conjunction with this poll, it'd be nice to see "How many music CDs do you own?" noticeably without the MP3 modifier that is supposed to justify Napster use.

I checked 5-10GB, and I counted both my wife's and my collection (a lot of it overlaps), but they are stored in our Nomad Jukeboxes, which is what we use to listen to them (yes, we each have one) :-)

2000 full albums 90% ripped from college buddies :)

And you don't wonder about the advisability of publically documenting those thefts? I mean, really, I don't care if people do it or not, but to commit that for time immemorial in a public forum...

Me, I have about 22GB, all ripped from my personal collection. I think about 500 albums or so, in all. The wife has a couple of hundred country albums, but none of that's ripped.

Personally, i dont believe it is theft. I own about 700 albums, i ripped them, the rest from my friends at school. Im not selling or trading them, just listenening.
