RE: I currently have terminals open on X machines
by Blue (Hermit) on Nov 14, 2000 at 01:23 UTC
I probably throw the curve off on this one. As a sysadmin perl addict, I usually have open sessions on perhaps a quarter of the systems I administer, which always puts it over 7.

I must admit, I love windows. I perfer to code with two or more terminals - one with my source open in vi, one actually running things. And perhaps a third with a data file I'm working with or other reference material.

        /me shudders.

Yeap, windows, as in X, not Windows, as in the bells-and-whistles-yet-signifying-nothing virus that is marketed as an operating system.

Perhaps that's a bit rough, Windows has come a long way. I just prefer UN*X in all it's flavors. No flame wars, all have their uses. Even if it's just solitare.

    Oopsie!!

I misread that. I have terminals open only on 3 machines, but I voted 4-5 since I have 5 XTerminals open on my machine. So I'm voting twice; please be aware that this poll will not measure up to the high level of statistical integrity we've become accustomed to here on Perl Monks.

Maybe I should stop making fun of the folks down in Florida... ;-)

Do you have ANY idea how ashamed I am to call myself a Floridian at the moment (even if I thankfully don't live in Palm Beach and am not elegable to vote)?? They took the exact same layout from those ballots, and changed the names to those of cartoon characters. Then they had 75 SECOND GRADERS pick thier favorite character. ALL of them got it right. Right now, even I don't resist making fun of those idiots who can't figure out what an arrow means.
        They who?

When i was a sysadmin, I would have 30+ windows open at any one time.

Right now, I have 12 windows open. My minimum is at least 7:

2 wondows to 2 different pines for work/home email.
3 windows tailing access_logs for the 3 domains i host that actually matter.
1 tailing /var/log/maillog on my mail server
1 tailing /var/log/messages on my shell server

There used to be several more opened by habit, but then i got cvs-mode over ssh working correctly in Xemacs, so those are gone now...

Wasn't this poll on slashdot about a year ago?? =)

Just remember to have the background color be different in each of those manifold windows, so you will be tempted to hesitate before doing rm -rf important/ on the production system.

Not that I have ever done that. Oh, that's a damned lie. I've done it, and even when I've made the windows different colours. Remind me to pay attention some day.

We came up with a fun way around that (it still involves paying attention, but not as much). Put the host name in your prompt (root:<catnip> for instance. With yellow pages this becomes really easy.

How about one with 6 screen sessions running inside it :-)

I have 3 SSH terminals running on 3 windows boxs connecting to 1 linux box so would that be 3, 4 or 1 ? Cuz the only box that counts is the linux box.

How things change--last month, I'd've punched the 7+ button without a second thought. Today, it's a big fat zero.

    Sigh.

I always find that I have a nasty habit of opening up a term window to do something, let it do it's thing, and forget about it. I guess it comes with having a shortcut key for xterm and far too many virtual desktops...

I have 6 desktops... :) I can fit about 15 on the pager across the bottom of the screen.

    I have 3.
1 for emacs (editing plenty of files, calendaring, reading news:)
1 for pine in my email server
1 for adventuring on other machines. :-)
