Re: This is a new poll?

back when I used to have polls at my website, I did this (which by itself wasn't quite original|new). That's why I voted 'No' here :-)

Once again, I get to post useless comments about a useless poll. Therefore it must be new :)

Well, it's new in the sense that I've never seen it on PM before. And it's new in the sense that it's not about Perl and segfaulting...

Come on, everybody knows that this is a demonstrative pronoun that points to and identifies a noun or a pronoun that is close by, either in space or in time.

    Where are the

However, it's a good contender for the "least informative poll prize".

While we're at it, where's the option for:

It is a new poll if:
    #!/usr/bin/perl use warnings; use strict; sub poll { &poll; } exit;
    is true.

It's a new poll until the polling stops, and enough time elapses to consider the results outdated.
So I guess we'll never know, since we'll run out of computer resources before we get an answer. We'll also get a warning about 'Deep recursion on...' which is my favorite warning :)

I voted yes just to be agreeable but then I read the poll again and decided that no would be a better option. When I attempted to lodge my "no" vote the poll told me I had already voted! Thus I can say unequivocally that the answer to "This is a new poll?" is no. *grin*

      Hi,
Obvioulsy the true answer is no. Not because this is not a new poll, just because it is not a poll.

Infact, there is the basic example of a meta poll: a poll about polls... and meta polls are not polls... or are they? Gee... is more difficult than I thought... :)

      Cheers

      Leo TheHobbit
        Just because it's a poll about polls, doesn't mean it's not a poll. :)

I voted no, because it was an old idea to base a poll on. In a very general way the outcome of this poll is whether or not people take it as:

        <sweeping generalization>
yes: Is this a different poll than was there before?
        or
no: Is this idea for a poll new?
        </sweeping generalization>

Whether or not the results are valuable is another matter entirely... :-D

Update: The grammar police say that the poll should probably be worded as: Is this a new poll?

    "Is this a question?"

    "What is reality?"

    "Is it art?"

"Does anybody really know what time it is?"

"Senator, have you stopped beating your wife?"

Can any of these questions be truly answered?

      1) yes.
      2) the set of all things and non-things which are not unreal.
      3) probably not.
      4) yes. currently, it is now.
      5) my name isn't senator. mu.
Oh, yes, you have alluded to another great non-question ... "What is mu?"

If you vote 'No' doesn't that violate some Nth rule of Thermodynamic's or something? Mutual Exclusivity? If you vote 'No' will you just cease to exist along with this poll!?

While it is an interesting fact that the pole is asking
whether it is new - thus demonstrating self awareness -
I must answer that yes, it is a new poll.
The vast response to this pole indicates that it is inevitably
new because no one would have voted had it been old. Given
the popular resentment for old things I would have expected
this poll to have been stoned and/or declared a "Security threat of the Fatherland"

If a poll is posted and nobody votes for it - does that make it unsound?

    givens:
This is a poll - yes according to Webster it is.
"This","is" and "a" refer to the poll under discussion.
The word needing definition is "new"

Choose the definition you wish from a dictionary. Now when did newness occur?

Was it when the poll was thought up? if so all votes should be no, because it is old by the time the voters read the question.

Was it new when the voter first saw the question? If so, how long after the voter read the question would they have to vote no?

Was it new as an idea to ask a rhetorical question? Once again all votes should be no.

On the other hand if newness is defined as this being the first time the voter has seen this particular poll then all answers sould be yes.

Just a question, if there are the same number of yes answers and no answers, is it a new poll?

    Enjoy
    dageek

"On the other hand if newness is defined as this being the first time the voter has seen this particular poll then all answers sould be yes."

Only if all voters vote the first time they see the poll, which is not the case.
