RE: How many computers do you own? (kudra: missing old computers)
by kudra (Vicar) on Jun 15, 2000 at 18:54 UTC
If only this question had been asked last month before I cleaned out the old machines (a move is coming soon). :-(
...suffering from 'lack of computers' envy...

This begs a follow-up poll (or at least, another geek purity test) -- "Of the computers that you own, how many are operational?"
I'm still using WordPerfect on my NEC laptop with a blazing 6MHz processor and 20Mb disk drive. I don't know if that counts as running, though. The clock can't handle dates after 1990. Oh well, even if I don't count that one, I'm still at 10+. Follow-on polls: How many of your computers run PERL? How many of your computers are connected to a network? How many of your computers are connected to more than one network?
Well, most of mine havn't been turned on in 10-15 years, but they are in boxes so I guess they COULD function. donn't have a disk drive for the commode-doors though.

    Hmmm...

If my third computer is separated out into four bits, how do I count that?

If I hack into a website and change their webpage, do I indeed "own" it?

inclusive?

Oh man... what was I thinking? I forgot the PDT! (personal digital toy) I wonder if I should have counted the cell phone? It has a computer in it. Hmmm....
oh yeah, the celly-telly def. counts. What about my robot assistant? He has a seperate computer to control the eye-beam lazer-tazers and flame thrower, so would he be, like, 2 computers?

the real question, of course, is whether I can, in good faith, count my bionic hip.

The Autonomic Pilot; it's FunkyTown, babe.

Or the dishwasher, or the brand new car, or the nintendo game, or...

        /wonko : P

I counted my brain... (they didn't say WORKING computers.)

what about emulators? or how about a virtual network of emulated machines on one machine?

Does "own" mean plugged in and running?

Well, I counted my Amiga 500, my commode-door 64 & 128 my pentium system and my PDA. only one is actually running, plus the PDA. numerous fragments don't count, presumably.
and i counted my HP 48gx, that counts, right?
Rats, my first post and I failed to login after purging all my cookies. (an e-emetic?)

4 computers, 4 installs of Perl - I'm not counting my TI-99, no port to cassette.
Ah, but how many DIFFERENT installs of Perl are there? Do you have ActivePerl for Windows on one, 6 on Linux on another, and 5.003 on the third? Or are they all the same version?

      - Ozymandias

But I havn't found Perl for the Palm Pilot yet.

I wonder what this poll has to do with Perl ?
Well, don't you have perl installed on all of them???

      #!/home/bbq/bin/perl
      # Trust no1!
2 of my 3 have perl. The laptop blows, so I never use it ... hence, no perl - ( laughs ).
Sure, but I still don't see the reason.
