    I started spending time on Use Perl, a really nice Perl site, though with different goals. I even started a journal there. Of course, my first journal entry was bemoaning the downtime here....

      Yes before I became active here slashdot and use Perl; were my two most frequented sites. The only gripe I ever had about it was the small amount of material that comes through. There's nothing wrong with that, but when you're bored at work or otherwise punting you tend to consume mass quantities. On occasion even the CPAN uploads could not satisfy my hunger.

      Also Chris/pudge is very much on the ball as far as editorial competency and user feedback goes.

    Kind of odd, but the downtime made me realize how much I like pm. So I finally decided to donate some money.

    PM being down made me realize just how dependent I am on it for both entertainment and research. I have resolved to finally anny up and give a generous donation to PM. Even tho the servers go down from time to time, I know that PM is the greatest forum/community for perl programmers.

    While it was down, I spent a fair amount of time at sourceforge. It was interesting, I found a new Perl editor, some cool scripts, and some new 'cool uses for perl'.

    PM is still my homepage, there is no equal, all the other sites are only complementary to Perl Monks.

    My thanks go out to all you who keep this thing running!

    The downtime didn't bother me that much. What really bothered me is that my personal computer blew a power supply and I'm also suspecting that the mobo went as well.

    My perl needs were satisfied with me reading Learning Perl: 3rd ed. For some reason I can't seem to see how the authors made the exercises in the book one-line programs. My perl files are at least 10 lines long (but they have a nice formatting style for maintainence).

    Update 2/11: Over the weekend, I dusted off an old AMD K6-2 system and got Linux working on it and got a Lucent Winmodem (Linmodem) working as well. I went ahead and downloaded LWP and the Tk modules so I have something to play with if I'm bored.

      I think PM's downtime is directly related to an alignment of the planets (hear me out), because in the same area of time (I'm not stretching NO) it snowed 5 inches in Texas, AND PM had some downtime.... ok so the snow happened a week after the PM downtime, but I think that's near enough to call it some sort of cosmic aftershock.

      But anyway, while PM was down I read a lot... I cought up on some webdesign projects I had been slacking on (*eyes the Flash 5 icon angrily*) and did my homework early, and I listened to music. Oh yeah and I played in the snow!

    Actually, I spent the downtime boning up on my other skills: Java, Oracle, UNIX admin, etc. I'll be out of work soon, and you never know what will come in handy...

    I would hit the web browser, check out the /. headings, and then realise I couldn't spend the next 30 minutes reading PerlMonks and had to go away and do something else. Sounds pathetic, I know, but I really missed having PerlMonks here.

    PerlMonks is one of the greatest online communities I've ever seen (And I've been around "a while"), and I enjoy every day of it being up.
    (Yes, its sappy, but its true).

      Hi JPaul - never seen another New Zealander here...
      Anyway, I spent the down time scouring the web for something equally as useful and fulfilling, which was not surprisingly, unacheivable.
      This site is great, and just as soon as I graduate and have some money to speak of, I too will donate. : )

    Well during the downtime I spend my time finishing some work that i leave a lot of time before, Growing my skills. And searching some stuff to upgrade my PC.

    God help me always to see the other face of the coin. And prevent me from accusing of betrayal those who don't think just as I do.

    Why isn't the frustrated option given? :) Ok, so I can't complain...Im one of those heathens who has only donated once. But, one can still get frustrated. That, of course, doesn't keep me from coming back every few minutes to see when its back.

    I believe I can speak for everyone when I say we all appreciate the site and its information; oh, and I can't leave out all the monks that help the little people (ie, me) out. :)
