Good localtime, all.

I'm writing on the occasion of my monk-day. Nineteen years have passed since I first joined this little community, based on a recommendation from TheDamian that I read in the pair.com monthly newsletter. At the time, I'd been using Perl for about three years, and wanted to expand my horizons from just a mailing list and the monthly Toronto Perlmongers meetings.

I'm still a little amazed that a language I picked up to 'try a few things in' has ended up supporting me for over twenty years -- but open source can be weird like that.

Remember -- never stop learning. And, whenever possible, be kind. :)

Thanks PJ. We owe you so much. Groklaw -- RIP -- 2003 to 2013.

Still one of the world's most-pragmatic languages, and still supported by one of the world's most-pragmatic web sites. Guess somebody must be doing something right, after all . . .

It's a language that works very well. The performance is really pretty impressive; it's amazingly backwards-compatible; there are a wealth of modules available on CPAN; it's available on a wide variety of platforms; there are lots of user groups available; there are still conferences about the language going on; there's still development going forward on the current version and on two other efforts (Raku and Perl 7); and you can still find work writing and maintaining Perl.

PS If you feel like Perl's made a different to your career, you can always donate to the Perl Foundation. :)
