My first MUD experience was my poor warrior character starving to death before I was able to read all the help available.

Where's the "Shoot the Wumpus" option?

    Cheers,

    JohnGG

My son who was 3 at the time was REALLY motivated to read and learn the keyboard playing Wumpus ;-). He wound up with a PHD in Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley.

And they used to say that computer games were bad for kids ;)

It wouldn't matter what I picked, my old computer would override my choice anyway and select the following option for me.

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

"If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

When I was a kid and I first played the original Doom this was about every 10-15 minutes... kid me just figured the computer police had made it illegal to shoot hellish monsters.

Just another Perl hooker - My clients appreciate that I keep my code clean but my comments dirty.

Having read footpad's home node, my first move would be to look around. Lighting the torch is the best way I know of achieving that.

Thanks PJ. We owe you so much. Groklaw -- RIP -- 2003 to 2013.

If I recall correctly from when I played "The Colossal Cave" on a paper terminal, there was one room where the entrance was too small to take your torch inside. The "solution" was to drop the torch while it was on and then enter the room. It would say something like "you are inside a small cavern with an aerie green light showing through the entrance. There is an emerald laying on the floor". Then take the emerald, leave the room and pick up your torch. It was somewhere in the early 1980's, and my memory has faded on this. Plugh!

Probably this is the most nerdish poll ever. If i guess right it is about some strange console game from the stone-age. To be honest: In these years my friends/girlfriends and me had other trouble: smoke a little smoke and drink a little drink (if money was available). Else we tried to have some other fun for free. Computers were for scientists/military (we believed so) or part of science-fiction movies. I was glad to have a bike. Very important to reach all the funny events on saturday night in a hurry. And we played other more realistic/naturalistic games - like: "I show you mine if you show me yours..."

The "open eyes" is from the HHGG text adventure?
