I voted "Other". Here is why:

    • Lose weight A couple of years ago I picked up The Hacker's Diet and a few months later had lost the 20 pounds that were bugging me and have kept them off since. I'd happily recommend it to any guys who want to lose some weight. (I am more hesitant to recommend it to women. John Walker fails to understand that women have significant monthly variations in water retention etc. What the books says will work for women as well, but not quite as smoothly.)
    • Get In Shape The exercise program in the above book did that as well. Of course I now need to maintain my exercise level, and I am hardly an athelete, but I've got no serious complaints either.
    • Money Related While I could always be happy with more money, my desires are relatively modest and currently are being satisfied. Those who always lust for more might wish to read this and reflect on the health benefits of learning to be satisfied with your life.
    • Get a Date My wife might object. ;-)
    • Become an Uber-Coder I'm not (some people's mistaking me for one notwithstanding), and another year won't make me into one so that is a silly goal to have. I do continue to learn though.
    • Win the Lottery What a horrible investment strategy. Basic financial planning is like a lottery that you are virtually guaranteed to win eventually...
    • Get a life I long ago figured out that what most people call a life I call boring, and vice versa. Satisfy yourself.
    • Get a (new)? job Luckily when I went looking last year, this guy put me in contact with that guy and I now have one I'm currently happy with. :-)
    • More Work See above.
    • Less Work See above.
    • Other That's gotta be it. Dunno what to pick though. Perhaps I'll learn something new. Now that I live in California, perhaps I should pick up Spanish. Or learn massage therapy. Choices, choices...
As a song put it once, The secret of life is enjoying the passing of time.. It is easier to learn to be satisfied with the life that you have than to get the life that will satisfy you. Particularly since by the time you have the things that you thought would satisfy you, you'll always have new things that you want.
I love your philosophy of life!

      Michael

      > Get a Date: My wife might object. ;-)

...or your wife might approve, if the date is with her.

hang up that keyboard and live!

...All the world looks like -well- all the world, when your hammer is Perl.
      ---v

Heh, never thought of that name coincidence.

Nope, this John Walker is a programmer who founded a successful company back in the 80's and got rich. He therefore represents a much happier version of the American Dream. :-)

A date. Perhaps I should check ebay out. If they sell lives as hardburn hopes, maybe they sell dates too! Anyhow, there's this guy at work who I've been goggling at for a while now. I think it's about time to ask him out already :)

I read that as "there's this guy at work who I've been Googgling at for a while now". I think that means I spend too much time on the web.

I can't find the "All of the above" option. Yes, they're all top goals. Well, no single goal in particular stands out from the others...
More work AND less work? Wow ,)

      C.

Sure. More work I enjoy, less work I don't enjoy. ^_^
Yes. Specifically, spend less time doing work and get more work done.

I had to vote for UberCoder, even though it's fairly rediculous, because it was the only thing in the right general category. The first two I don't care about much; as long as I don't *gain* any clothes-sizes, I guess that'll be decent enough. I have minor money-related goals, but nothing of any particular significance. Don't want a date; I'm a loner in the extreme. Won't touch the lottery with a ten-foot pole. (I majored in math...) Don't want anything that resembles what most people call a "life"; I've managed to conscientiously avoid that sort of nonsense. The job I have is one I'd like to keep for now, and I'm working about 25 hours/week, which is just about right. (I have a handful of other, non-job-related responsibilities, and I like to keep *some* free time.) I could have gone for Other, I guess, but Other is just so _generic_. So I went for Uber-hacker, because most of my goals are centered around one kind or another of learning, and a lot of them are related to computer developer type subjects, so at least it's in the right general ballpark.

Learn to drive...
by cLive ;-) (Prior) on Jan 01, 2004 at 00:00 UTC
I've been saying this for years, but I think I really should get round to it this year. As much as I hate cars, I think my responsibilities as a parent mean I should at least learn how to drive the damn things, even if I still refuse to own one of them :)

    .02

    cLive ;-)

Cor blimey, another person who doesn't drive. To explain I grew up in the wilds of Scotland and couldn't afford a car. Moved to London and didn't want to drive a car (have you seen how they drive {shudder} scary stuff). Now I live in a small town and don't really need a car.

But like cLive ;-) says later, as an emergency contingent, its probably a good idea.

Nice to know I'm not alone as a non driver :)

You live in Santa Monica, California and you don't drive? How is that possible? No kidding, how do you manage?

      -Logan
"What do I want? I'm an American. I want more."

I live 1.7 miles from my office, cycling there and wherever else I need to go to and, at a pinch, persuade my wife to give me a ride if really needed.

It's only the fact that she's ill and out of town at the moment that I'm beginning to realise how important it is that I learn for emergencies like this :)

        Needs must, I suppose...

    OTHER!

My top goals in no particular order:

    • Work closer to home
    • Work from home at least 2x a week
    • Get at least one of my dogs ready for competive obedience
    • Finish my home brewery in the basement (well... Phase 1 anyway...)

I would like to lose weight and get in shape but past efforts in this direction have always backfired on me (weight lost seems to come back with interest the following year).

My wife wouldn't approve of me getting a date (unless it was with her :-)

I don't see myself becoming an UberProgrammer although I would like to be a good programmer

I figured that the best choice for me was to get a new job (preferably with less work :-) as I have been in my current job for more than 11 years.

I have a date, and a girlfriend - my mad plan for the year is to get married.

Stressful, exhausting, but probably the most worthwhile thing I will have done in my 27 years.

So yeah... My first job would be nice... It'd be lovely if it was in the programming for the web area or some-such.... But I'll greet minimum wage in retail well enough... ^_^
Bravo! That's pretty much my plans too. All I lack right now is the ring. (Or more specifically, the money for the ring) ++

    Well, lessee...

Lose weight: Naah, I'm a good weight right now.
Get in shape: What kind of shape are you thinking? Rhombus? Trapazoid?
Money Related: To be related to money, now that's a concept.
Get a Date: Had one once, February 30th. She didn't show.
Become an Uber-Coder: Naah, that would only mean more work. I'm a Perl programmer, therefore I'm $lazy[0] by nature.
Win the Lottery: Would be nice, but I'm not betting the bank on that one.
Get a Life: As opposed to losing one? Or how about getting an Un-life?
Get a Job: No thanks, got one I like already.
More Work: Are you !@#$%-ing nuts?
Less Work: Hey, it's already a $government{agency} job. How much less can there be?

So, I think I'll stick with my resolution from several years back (and still running): I resolve not to make any more New Year's Resolutions.

Others. None of these have anything to do with the advent of a new year; these are just goals that I pursue.

    • To better understand the universe. To make it better.

    • I will delve into the nature of time. This sounds like the study of a grand and universal thing, and it may be, but it is a very personal thing. I look to note how I sense time, how some moments seep into me and endure, how others seem to evaporate without a trace, how one moment bears and births another. Can you by will construct or find a good or perfect moment?

That sounds cerebral but it is not an intellectual endeavor. I have had some success treating truth as something to be viscerally felt or known. That success leads me to look at time in the same way. I think that time is going to be a much more subtle thing to sense this way.

    • To remove sarcasm from my word and thought. Sarcasm seems to have no good use. Even where it is appropriate to defend, to distance; even where my anger and pain might seek to create like companions in another person; in all these sincere words or silence would serve better.

    • As Friends do, I am attempting to stop using honorifics and titles. I had intentionally developed the habit of using titles to be less rude than most Americans(USA) are. I thought to honor people more. I have come to realize that this doesn't work for me. I would be more warm toward people; I didn't and don't need to be more formal.

    Be well.

    Well,

I had to cast my vote toward the job thing. I'm retiring from the Marine Corps this Summmer and the butterflies are beginning to quicken their pace in my gut. Despite my education and experience coding, I may have to realistically seek employment that does not involve programming.

I've thought about teaching programming at a community college, but the the legions of unemployed coders are getting wise to this avenue. It's a race to grab the last, open jobs.

If any Monks have a few leads on IT sectors that are still virgin (i.e. bioinformatics, etc..), let me know.

by Sandy (Curate) on Jan 06, 2004 at 19:14 UTC
Spend more time with my family.

    s/time/quality time/

    1. Don't need to lose weight.

    2. Already go to gym to keep in shape.

    3. Have enough money to keep me happy.

    4. Have date with hubby at least once a month.

    5. Could always learn to be a better coder, but not my top goal (see above).

    6. If I win the lottery, and still spend a good part of my time working (I love my work), then I will know for certain that I am a nerd. Prefer not to know.

    7. Am very happy with current job.

    8. Have enough work.

    9. Have enough work.

    10. Other: -> see above.
