Unparent tangents?

Hello everyone. Is it possible to unparent tangents in threads? In the conversation of Expression form of map or grep, I answered a question as to why I cared about the number of lines. I replied here, and that created a tangent. Is it possible to unparent my reply and its replies into a new thread, maybe titled "I do not like scrolling" or something? It would be to keep the focus on the map/grep topic and let the new topic be its own thread.

In my mind, tangents could confuse some newer users.

I know this may be a bad thought or too much of a bother, but I would like to know. Please?

My OS is Debian 10 (Buster); my perl versions are 5.28.1 local and 5.16.3 or 5.30.0 on web host depending on the shebang.

No matter how hysterical I get, my problems are not time sensitive. So, relax, have a cookie, and a very nice day!

Retitle tangents

I agree with the others, that is, you're free to consider your own node, but splitting a sub-thread from its parent may cause it to lose context. Just to make another suggestion: You're also free to re-title a subthread (which also has the advantage that when linked to directly, the link will display more cleanly, like I've done with this node: Retitle tangents.

IIRC this behaviour (replacing a node title entirely, as opposed to appending something) upsets a subset of users who rely on a certain feed/view.

      Update: s/reply/rely/

I keep adding extra info in brackets after the original title, similar to (updated)

This helps keeping track in RAT view.

Trouble is the title inheritance, I think (brainstorming) :

        • that the first retitle should carry both titles New Title (was: Old Title)
        • the numbering should continue back to the original root, hence Re^3: New Title (was: Old Title)
        • the old-title should be automatically stripped in further replies Re^4: New Title
        • comments like (updated) should be stripped too, it's total nonsense that this is inherited.
        • in case a sub-thread is promoted to a proper thread the original context and title should be preserved in the root-node (but not the numbering)
I repeat these are theoretical thoughts, I'm sure we won't be able to implement it anyway.

A clean implementation would require an extended data model.

Otherwise this would rely on heuristics to be coded ... which would become ugly when renumbering.

        Cheers Rolf

Ah, I didn't know that. I agree with LanX that it's possible to just append to the title.

I think this would make much of the site structure a mess, if people could decide to split a thread into several. Often 'tangent' threads would likely be insufficient to fit into any section of the site. My advice would be just to ignore things you consider to be off topic if it's really that much of a distraction for you. This would also be ripe for abuse by our resident trolls, and likely IMHO cause more confusion for newer users than being able to reply or ignore posts at their discretion.

I was thinking of putting it up for consideration to make it root level as hippo suggested, that's it. I was wondering if nodes could be moved to root level after consideration. The community decides if it should be moved. 8)

'Is it possible to unparent my reply and its replies into a new thread, maybe titled "I do not like scrolling" or something?'

The node you linked to and example title you suggest have what to do with a perl question? "Would you accept that I do not like scrolling and use the syntax highlighter to keep sane? 8)" isn't a perl question, which section of the site would you suggest posting this to, and how would this be less confusing for others/new users? Wouldn't it just make more sense to leave that sub thread with a reply along the lines "I've posted a new different question here", rather than either just ignoring something until focus on the core issue isn't a problem or relying on others voting and moving things around?

Yes, it is. As a Curate you are able to consider the node which you think should be promoted to root level ("unparented").

Consideration is one potential way, which doesn't mean it's going to get the required votes, however this doesn't address the issue of where to put things, since much of this won't make sense to anyone else out of context. The current documentation would need to be updated to reflect a Reparent purely because the author of the root node feels a reply within a thread is causing them issues for whatever reason. As it stands anyone at the appropriate level can create such a consideration, for any other users posts.

Yes, it's possible. The janitors have the power to execute such a change. The consideration process can be used to request such a change.

The gods are also standing by to clean up, should any messes result, e.g. with thread linking.
