I hope the original creators of the site are aware of the good they have done for so many of us who use it. The same goes for all the people who have participated and contributed here. The site has become pretty antiquated in its look and feel. Its code base is goofy by today's standards. Perl has enjoyed tremendous success and then tremendous competition for a slice of the pie it helped to bake. But for some of us, this site was instrumental in helping us hone our craft, regardless of the language we use today, or will use in the coming years. I use Perl every day at work. But I use other tools and languages too. Some may gradually become more used, and others less, over time. But here I gained an appreciation for problem solving, and many of the things I learned here I'm able to translate into other domains. 20 years. Wow. I've been here for over 15 of them. To me that's another "wow." Thanks everyone. While I hope to be working in this business another fifteen, the next fifteen will probably bring a lot more change to our industry than the last fifteen, or even twenty. It's doubtful that PerlMonks will stand the 40-year test of time. But it's still here today, and eventually its legacy will be how it facilitated aspects of our own growth.

No, I'd be inclined to set the "birth" of PerlMonks at the date it opened to the public: December 23, 1999.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16 ,000 zombies.
