The problem seems to be stated: either $val or <val>:
$ perl -le'$_=pop;/([\$@*%]|(<))(.*)(?(2)>)/;print"($1)($3)"' '$xyz'
($)(xyz)
$ perl -le'$_=pop;/([\$@*%]|(<))(.*)(?(2)>)/;print"($1)($3)"' '$xyz>'
($)(xyz>)
$ perl -le'$_=pop;/([\$@*%]|(<))(.*)(?(2)>)/;print"($1)($3)"' '<xyz>'

    '$xyz>' is definately NOT a valid symbol table entry.
