Hello, I have been around for a while. It seems to me that navigating through PerlMonks is terribly slow compared to other forums. Why is that so? I'm using 5M connection and the newest Mozilla Firefox.

I don't know how recently you've checked Zawodny's writings on the matter, but he says most problems are fixed, so long as you're using MySQL on FreeBSD 5.0 or newer compiled against the LinuxThreads library. I was wondering after reading that if anything like that had been tried for PM. I guess this is a good time to ask.

I know you guys had already made some progress regarding coaxing MySQL on FreeBSD into performing better. Is there any more progress lately, perhaps around this new information out of Yahoo?

    Assorted quips:

    • We know you don't read very fast and are trying to accommodate that deficiency.
    • Perl becomes more distinguishable from line noise at lower bit rates.
    • A pensive place such as a monastery should never be rushed.
    • You can't hurry perfection.
    • PerlMonks is holding back to let Perl6 catch up.
    • Donations are welcomed.

...all in good fun, of course.

    Donations are welcomed.

Actually, while we are on that topic:

    • what kinds of donations - time, resources, coding skills, etc. would be needed to speed up the site?
    • In the eyes of those most involved in keeping PM going, are there other issues to be resolved that are more critical than performance, and if so, what are they?

In these times money might be in short supply, but I suspect brains and even time might increasingly not be. We should think about how to take advantage of that.

    Best, beth

At least, with thankfully very few exceptions, it's worth the wait - I'd sooner have a slow monastry than none at all ... besides which, when was the last time you visited a place of worship where the pace of life wasn't slow & measured ?

A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))

It's programmed in Perl, what do you expect?

    -sam

They should have used a compiled language! :P

And you didn't even know bears could type.

"It's programmed in Perl, what do you expect?"

Only you could get away with a crack like that!

It's normal for monastery to be slow ;)

I find this claim ludicrous. http://www.giantitp.com/forums is so slow that 3 out of 4 posts actually fail and they have a whole section to complaining about it.

Edit: Actually I had a bit more of a thought about this and I had a look on http://boardreader.com/. Gitp is ranked 593 whilst perlmonks.org is ranked worse than 100,000 so presumably perlmonks.org ought to be fairly lightly loaded. Have you looked up the forums you are comparing perlmonks against on boardreader?
