Today its been a year since I joined Perl Monks. I have no idea how I got here, maybe it was from some link on /., what was I doing on the Dec. 23rd 1999? Was I sitting in front of my computer at home, lonely, wondering what I would get my sister for Xmas? Was I just bored out of my mind on a Thursday night? (yes I checked, it was a Thursday)

I have no idea... And although I have come to contribute (aka: post questions, not answers! mind you) less over the past few months, I still feel like I am very much a Perl Monk, even after a year has gone by. I feel this is a community that I truely belong to. I have never felt odd or wierded out by slapping idiotic remarks to the chatterbox. I have learned to use "postincrement" in a phrase... Ex: "Dude! That flick postincrement!" translates to "$_, that flick++!" I have come to understand RTFM better, and learned how to RTFM better.

Bottom line, I still feel like a Perl Monk. Thank you all. Thank you, vroom.

Oh! And I almost forgot... If you're wondering what the monastery was like a year ago I would suggest you check out Nostalgic. I wrote some on this topic and others came back with some very good examples of their own.

    Merry X-Mas everyone!

I was about to post the same thing. I saw the link off of Everything 2 and had to check it out. Back then, there were no questions, no voting or experience points, no #perlmonks, and no chatterbox. Look at how far we've come.

Congratulations on your first year, vroom. Here's to another! And thanks to everyone else who's contributed questions, answers, discussions, and community.

I'm glad BBQ posted this. I wasn't in the monastery on the 23rd since I'm at my parents house and didn't take any of my computers home. I remember exchanging e-mails with BBQ and the excitement of seeing an account being made. BBQ was the first user to create an account and stick around who didn't know me before this all started. Maybe next time I'm in CA we can party BBQ.

A lot of interesting things have happened in the past year and hopefully this will continue. A lot of it has to do with your collective commitment to helping each other out. A lot of the cool features were your ideas. Thanks for making the monastery a useful place to learn and have fun. Thanks for taking an active interest in making sure this place continues to be as useful, hopefully friendly (most of the time) and fun as it has been in the past year.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

And on the perl monks' spirit of change and xmas cheer and all that good stuff, I bring you yet another undocumented feature (from my homenode) "User since: Thu Dec 23 at 11:09" :)

Hmmm, did we forget something there Mr. vroom? Must I lick your forehead?

However, the year is included in the standard header at the top of the node... "by BBQ on Thu Dec 23 1999 at 14:09", so it's not completely obscured. :)

Even though I am not quite at my year here, I have come to enjoy this place a great deal. It's good to see some of the people that have been here a while still here and active. It's what gives this site it's life and vitality for the most part.

    Happy monk-day BBQ!
