First off, forgive me if this topic has been discussed before, I searched on 'classified' and 'ads' and found no worthwhile nodes. So if it has, I blame the search engine...:)

Basically what I envision is a simple little section where people can post ads for whatever. At the moment I'm thinking that "community" would be the deciding factor, rather then perl. I wouldn't think it would need any custom code type frills, something akin to sopw would be more then sufficient. I would imagine the nodes would look something like "Hi, I'm selling off a bunch of my old perl books and wanted to give them a home with a loving monk, email me." Just a basic message letting other people know they have something to offer. Thoughts? Opinions? Anyone?

    So, you want to hang a cork-board up in the halls of the Monastery? I like the idea, but do see a nightmare of moderation/node-reapage with something of such potential for mis-use/off-topic postings.

    you mean like ebay?

    Seriously, I don't personally see the need for such an animal here.

      Ebay is so far from what I was talking about that it never even occurred to me that someone might suggest it instead. Ebay is a commerically run auction system where people place items for bid by other people. I'm talking about a simple little "cork board" to use an earlier analogy, solely for this commmunity. It is not a unique idea, but neither are the ideas behind this online commmunity. I'm just looking at another method to foster communityness.

    To me, this sounds a lot like Monastery Brewery? As I said there: ...breweries associated with monasteries, were a link to the "real" world and as such a place where non-monastarians were able to buy the products and services from monks.

    Last year, I was fairly opposed to any kind of off topic section (jobs, non-perl, whatever). Now, I would agree to a section marked "Off Topic", where people can post whatever they want, classifieds, job ads, javascript questions, anything that doesn't fit into the current sections. I am opposed to a specific "Classifieds" section, but not an Off-Topic section where basically anything goes. Because there is no stopping the flurry of (OT) I like perlmonks, how fix car software posts, and a lot of monks don't care to merely delete all such posts, they need to go into their own section, off-topic. I want a single section to discourage things from getting out of hand.

      That's what I'd do. The off-topic section would have no place on the "front page". I'd also do other steps to make an "off-topic" section less of a problem...

      Have a user setting so that monks can choose to not see such in Newest Nodes and have it set such that Anonymous Monk does not see them. Make Super Search default to not searching such. Have the "off topic" "section page" (like Seekers of Perl Wisdom and Meditations) only show titles not the contents of root nodes. I'd be tempted to not have a "post new off-topic node" form, but I think that wouldn't be helpful. Probably just not allow Anonymous Monk to post new off-topic root nodes (make it a level 4 power but don't advertise that). Charge 2 XP for posting an off-topic root node or having your node moved into the off-topic section... (:

    The idea of an "Off Topic" section sounds good! For example, I had been thinking for some time of a post asking monks how they found work - particularly short term contract work. But where to post? A moderated cork-board would be most welcome.

    One of the greatest things about this site is the community nature of it, something which is missing from so many other types of communities and something long gone from Usenet.

    Whatever we can do here to enahnce the community spirit would, I think, be appreciated by many monks.

    Hehe. Where can we go with this? Personal ads, anyone?

    <personal ad>
    Wanted: a cute girl that loves C, Perl, and UNIX and has a presence of mind not to vomit inside the car. Walks on the beach and all-night hacking sessions guaranteed.
    </personal ad>

      A girl who loves UNIX, Perl, and C? I would do anything for a girl like that. She would also have to wear thick-rimmed glasses and be into postmodern art. Someone who wouldn't be afraid to don a black dinner dress or a polka-dot shirt with neon slippers. Yeah, I can picture my geek girl now, smiling at me through the console of my computer. Black glasses against smooth skin bathed in the soft glow of a Mac . . .
      psst, thats not valid xml. =)
