I understand that the reason for not allowing "approved" posts to change is sound, as it keeps people from getting something to the frontpage then changing it to a giant flame, however I want to change my post, and it's already approved, so I cannot do so. I thought I would ask the opinion of the other monks, and of our leader, vroom, can you put in some logic that checks the level of the monk in question, and if said monk is level X or above, allows him or her to alter their frontpage nodes?
Do the other monks think of this as something that is a worthy addition to the monestary?
I posed this question in the perlmonks channel, and, there was some very interesting discussion - I hope that this post spawns some discussion as well.

Ah, but you are assuming that Monks above a certain level will behave themselves and not sully the front page, but I think there have been plenty of examples from monks of all levels where they have let themselves get carried away with the moment and used some 'flamage'....myself included in there.

We're all human and will at some point probably speak before we think.

Perhaps a better option is to be able to click a box on your node that is displayed on the front page to have it removed from the front, and then you can change it. Then if someone wants it moved back up to the front page, they will make it happen.

    just $0.02. cheers!
Kind of pointless if you're high enough level to approve posts, isn't it? Unless there's some mechanism preventing you from approving your own posts that I don't know of (which is a possibility, since I haven't looked into it at all).

Update: Turnstep, I agree that the front page isn't read, and cite you as evidence. I just meant that having nodes removed from the front page was exactly the same as allowing people to edit front-page nodes, if the level-limit for editing was set to Friar.

No, you can definitely approve your own posts. For me, as for most monks (especially the higher levels) the frontpage is kind of irrelevant anyway: everyone just reads the Newest Nodes page anyway. :)

I don't know how big a deal the front page issue is, since it seems that a number of people work from the Newest Nodes nodelet.

A solution that I've been thinking about is you petition 2, or possibly 3, monks of sufficient rank to go to a page where the node number of the offending node is entered. After 2 (or 3) different monks have entered the node number, it then becomes available for a one time edit by the owner.

This removes the work load from vroom, doesn't add significant additional effort for the moderators, and causes the monk-with-a-problem to think about what he's going to edit. e-mail or /msg can be used to petition the ranked monks to grant the editing ability, and if anyone really cares, puts a level of anominimity in the process, since the 2 (or 3) approving monks don't really need to know who each other are.

This same mechanism could conceivably used to allow a user to request a delete of a node, also. In fact, it has the advantage of allowing the regular moderators to delete empty nodes, since when a moderator notices and empty node, s/he just enters the node number. The next moderator does the same thing, and before you know it, *poof*, it's gone.

Oh yea, and a moderator can't enter node IDs s/he owns for editing/deleteing. All action requires the approval of 2 (or 3) non-owning monks.

RE: Changeing a Frontpage Node (Doc Clan?)

Somewhere in the Monastery I saw a node where you can request root node edit or delete from the Nefarious Documentation Clan.   Or is that something different from Front Page edit?

Since my change is really in the way of content, not and editorial one, (I realized that a code snippet I posted made me look really lame because it was out of context) I would feel bad posting the request for change to the editorial page.
