I apologize for things being unbearably slow here yesterday. The reason was 'Hemos gets Hitched' story on slashdot. The server perlmonks is on also hosts hemos.net in the current scheme and lots of slashdotters viewing 600k pictures doesn't exactly speed things up. I thought I'd just let y'all in on the reason for the problem.

Congratulations Hemos!

Uploading those images for mass viewing on Slashdot without first resizing, compressing and providing thumbnails for them was pretty lame. I say we demand the head of CowboyNeal on a stick!

vroom, Creator of the Monastery and Saint in All Our Books,

You have mentioned once or twice that you'd like to move PM to a dedicated server, but that there's a game to be played with the Everything Development Company to get that. And as we've all learned last night and today (I think I saw jcwren twitching from PM withdrawal) there's now a sizeable community of people who rely on this site.

What I'd like to know is if there's some way we, the users of PerlMonks, can express our interest to The Powers That Be regarding a dedicated system for PerlMonks. If I had it, I would simply offer the server; unfortunately, I don't have it. On the other hand, I do have an email client, and I'd be more than willing - as would everyone else, I feel sure - to let the appropriate people know how much we rely on your site, and how much we'd appreciate steps being taken to prevent a slowdown such as this one. Granted, we all hope Hemos will only get married once, but still...

And, guys/girls, please remember; IF vroom thinks this would help, and IF he posts an address to use, PLEASE use your spell checker, watch your language, and be extremely polite. If you have any question whether it's suitable, don't send it.

    - Ozymandias

Update: vroom has a reply up regarding this issue, so don't send any email. Read his comments here.

The site should be on a dedicated server within the next few weeks. The new servers for E2 need to get in place and then this site will move to the old E2 server. So until the we just need to sit tight and roll with the punches. If things haven't settled down by tomorrow I'll see if the pictures can't be mirrored else where so you can get all get the page loads you deserve.

Basically what I did was I opened about ten browser windows, and browsed PM in all the windows at the same time...it didn't help much, but it made me feel better. I was NOT a happy camper.

This is funny...I was just remarking to a friend (jokingly) that PM acts slashdotted this weekend. Little did I know it really was!
