I noticed in the Newest nodes posts with 2 or 3 REs Such addition of RE will soon obscure the title of what is being replied to.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

IMHO: Replies to replies should probably have Re: prepended to them. It would be clearer to give the Original replies a different title, but this would make scanning the newest nodes confusing. I think the way things stand at the minute the Re:Re:'s are necessary to avoid a 'flat' discussion which would not always make sense.
as someone somewhere already suggested, Re(3): or similar would look much better than Re:Re:Re:
Or you could do a RE(username): subject where the user name is the author of the comment you are replying to.

I completely second that. Indeed it's extremely annoying.

OTOH I wonder where they come from, since PM's reply mechanism provides the IMHO very clear automatic "Re^2:", "Re^3:" prefixes...

do people edit them manually? Only rarely do I (feel the need to) change the node title, and when doing so I include an indication of the previous one, after having been -rightly- bashed for not doing so.

Update: Oops, I had mistaken this for a recent post and hadn't realized it was back from 2000... I already forsee a cascade of downvotes falling on me... :-(
