Allright...You asked for it: here's my explanation: Jouke is my first name. It's a rather unique first name. Even in the Netherlands it's not very common. Everywhere I go and have to register myself, I seem to be the first 'Jouke', so whenever I can, I claim my first name. I'm almost certain that I'm the only Perl programmer called Jouke. Search Google for Jouke Perl and I think only things related to me come up...Maybe some guy named 'Jouke Kleerebezem', who is a graphical artist or something may come up too...

So there it is :)

    Huh, no fair, it's easy to have an unusual name if you're Dutch! (/me used to work with the Dutch when in the City and had clients called Ruud Lipps and Freek Monster)

      I'm not Dutch (but I do know two words of Dutch, no I can't repeat either of them in polite company -- there is a rather humorous story behind that but I digress), but the story of my name pretty much matches Jouke's.

      I really like having a unique name that isn't too weird or too hard to spell for people over the phone. While my wife was pregnant, we worked hard on coming up with good names with this and other goals in mind.

      We came up with several names that we really liked and even one set of such names that sounded good together. Unfortunately, the second set of names (yes, we needed two sets) was harder and so we eventually found the final name to complete the last set so that it sounded nice but didn't sweat as much as before on it having the right properties. Turns out it was the number one most common first name for boys born that year! Arghhh! I've named my son the modern equivalent of "John"! I'm so ashamed! ;)

    Unusal names rocks. =)

    There's only a few hundred people in Denmark called "Ask", and most of them are younger than I. I yet have to meet someone with my name in California. =)

      Yes they do.
      And I'm happy to always find that my username is not taken.
      But you've been taking it all over the Perl community,
      which is why I had to use my initials insted.

        Hehe; yes - I get that a lot!

        A common variation is that people think I've adopted it because I would reply to so many mails on the mailinglists.
