What if the data includes duplicated values? The Perl CookBook (1^st and 2^nd editions) had an additional line:

if ( $tree->{VALUE} > $value ) { insert( $tree->{LEFT}, $value ) }
elsif ( $tree->{VALUE} < $value ) { insert( $tree->{RIGHT}, $value ) 
else { warn "$value duplicated" }

or, if you want to include the duplicates, change either '>' to '>=', or '<' to '<=':

if ( $tree->{VALUE} >= $value ) { insert( $tree->{LEFT}, $value ) }
elsif ( $tree->{VALUE} < $value ) { insert( $tree->{RIGHT}, $value )

Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
