(my $tmp = $s) =~ s/,/./;
$s = $tmp if looks_like_numbers($tmp);
You'd be better of specifying which columns are numeric, though. Text::CSV_XS can even take advantage of that information if you tell it (via types).

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
