Kent Pitman's paper has moved to a new home URL:
http://www.nhplace.com/kent/Papers/Condition-Handling-2001.html
This paper was originally written as an HTML document, exactly as shown below. Any final reformatting that was done for hardcopy publication in LaTeX may have been lost in this version. Any new text that has been added for this annotated version appears bracketed and in color green; such text is intended to help clarify the historical context as time passes.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
