I think I fit the profile of your intended audience. My opinion is that it is not the technical features or the special libraries/modules that would appeal to programmers out of Perl. After all, pretty much anything can be done in any language.
For me it is the culture, the very 'character' the language possesses. It is so much different than any other (at least at the time it was written)and triggered so much interest in the scripting languages that it deserves at least taking a look at.
That's all. Oh! And use strict; of course!

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
