I could be wrong, but this smells a little bit like homework. I think it's the well defined algorithm that's making my nose twitch. It is generally frowned upon to ask for help on homework here, although I think that most monks won't complain if you provide code showing that you are making progress, but are stuck on one nuance of the language. If I'm wrong in my assumption, my apologies.

Perl Monks is a great place for finding help, but you usually have to show a little bit of initiative yourself. I'm not sure if you're asking for a program to be written, for a starting point, or just if Perl is a good language for this task.

If it's the third, then your answer is yes. Perl is suited for this task. However, just because Perl is suitable doesn't mean that it is suitable for you to do this in Perl. You should pick the language that you are most comfortable with. I note that you might know C++ (since you said in your previous node that the existing modules are in C++); maybe you should use that language for this.

As for learning Perl, there are a lot of great references on the web, and in book form. Hopefully if you spend a few hours with one of these, it will help you gain a better understanding of the capabilities of Perl.
