I suspect that idea may get classed as "putting unnecessary strain on the server", since when you hit the button, it means you're actually actively reading, but if the page is refreshed for you, most of the time it will probably be happening with no useful result whatsoever..
You can do this yourself in several ways though, there is an XML ticker showing the newest nodes which you could write a script to grab at intervals. Some browsers already have this sort of utility built-in (refresh page at intervals of X minutes). You could watch/scrape im2s telnet stream which also reports when new nodes appear. C.
