If you would like to use a regex as a variable, you should use qr. For example:
use strict;
my $string = 'Price: $21343.355344';
my $searchString = qr|^Price: \$([0-9]+\.[0-9]+)|;
if($string =~ /$searchString/)
{
print "Matches: $1\n";
}
else
{
print "No Match: $`\n";
}
I think you are getting messed up because $( gets replaced with $REAL_GROUP_ID (ie $( ...)

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
