hey all, i had a sort of epiphany this last saturday. i was at a computer programming competition for my high school. the way these things work is that they give you 6 problems and three hours. the problems are (fairly) simple programs to be written, usually taking input of one form or another and performing some string manipulation or somewhat simple math function on them. each problem is split into a 3,6, and 9 point version, gettin progressivley more difficult respectivley. while sitting there typing my brains out using QB and C++ i realized that many of the things i was doing with 20 or 30 lines of complicated code could be done in a simple 2 or 3 line perl script. this is reall what turned me on to go and (almost obbsesivley) try to master perl. it just so happens that i made level 2 the same day...coincidence? i think not.
btw, here is a sample of one of the problems from this weekend for those interested: Given a sentence, print out each word and the number of vowels it contains. Print them out in order by number of vowels and them alphabetical if same number of vowels. this was hell in Qbasic...not too too much better in C++ ~michael In reply to Competition fuels obsession over Perl by snowsmann
