Agreed, wholeheartedly -- nothing makes me more suspicious about a module than when the author themselves cannot come up with a simple example of use.
On the other hand, examples are also a useful 'depth indicator', if you take my meaning. (Which is to say, if there's a "simple example" and I don't even understand how it's being used, it's either not simple or so far beyond me that I can't comprehend -- either way, not my module du jour.)
