I like the limit of 255 characters, because there should not be more than that to pass your message. Longer message takes longer to type and pointless for short discussion. Not only that it gives you less time to read and understand it on your screen for chatterbox clients.
Typed within less characters, the message can be expressed quicker also.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
