Yes, there really is a lack of clues out there, especially since nobody is looking for clues to begin with.
You should be both scared and saddened.
This student of yours, didn't bother to slap on a -T on the code she was trying to decipher, so you've got to wonder how much of this is your fault? (who knows, the person who originally wrote this was probably one of your students, and you've got to wonder if she was truly a bad student).
You have to wonder why isn't security the first concern being thought to people...

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
