Thanks to you & kevbot for posting about YAPE::Regex::Explain. That was what I wanted to do too before posting my explanation.

I did not have the module installed, so I tried installing via cpan first on "Ubuntu on Windows". The response to characters typed was too slow. After getting permission problem, went to find the right knobs to tweak for cpan shell to install things in my own directory. Due to continued slow response I went to FreeBSD under virtual machine already running.

Tweaked the knobs again ...

# My<something>.pm under cpan directory; default is "$HOME/.cpan".
makepl_arg => 'PREFIX=/dir',
mbuild_arg => '--install_base /dir'

... When the message came up that installation failed due to YAPE::Regex not being installed, I just wrote the explanation myself as this turned out to be too much work consuming too much time in order to avoid the work.

I went back to cpan on FreeBSD, installed Y::R (which ought to have been installed as a dependency); then install of Y::R::E went on its merry way.

In order to use the Y::R::E module installed in my own directory with system perl, I needed to set $PREL5LIB obviously. But ...

export PERL5LIB="/dir/lib/perl5"
[download]

... was not enough. I had to add 2 more sub-directories ...

export PERL5LIB="/dir/lib/perl5:/dir/lib/perl5/site_perl:/dir/lib/perl
+5/site_perl/mach"
[download]

... why could perl not find the last two directory paths by itself in year 2018? (Yes, I am aware the virtues of installing, compiling my own perl. And I love that; had built multiple times on FreeBSD & CentOS.)

Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
