I have 5.22.1 on my VM.

Since we don't use it at $work much, except for personal projects, it doesn't matter. But if we did, I would just keep upgrading my VM periodically, and then checking that the production version still works for the code. As it is, it's probably time to upgrade again. Maybe after I update to Ubuntu 18 LTS.

Since everything seems to be going to the cloud these days, and the cloud providers tend to provide fairly recent versions, it makes sense to just keep ratcheting up, fixing issues as they come up in the version transitions. Because at some point, some feature will be deprecated, or some "it works this way" sugary tidbit that was never really intended will go away.

Title:
Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
  • Want more info? How to link or How to display code and escape characters are good places to start.
