Fact: The answer was downvoted.
Opinion: The answer was likely deleted to avoid further downvotes. My guess is that the person felt the time and effort expended was not appreciated. Maybe the person did not understand what was wrong with the answer, and therefore did not know how to improve it.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
