Version::Compare gets it right (right for what you are expecting):
perl -MVersion::Compare -E 'say Version::Compare::version_compare("450
+.80.82","450.57")'

It's about 50 lines of code including whitespace and has no non-core dependencies at runtime. I've found it to be able to handle versions such as PHP versions, WordPress versions, and Linux-typical versions.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
