If lexical variables are already declared in the calling package, you can change their value, e.g. with PadWalker.
Otherwise it wouldn't compile under strict if you try to use them.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be

have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
