I have to admit to using the following structure when in need of a switch compatible statement in perl 5.14 and earlier i.e. when feature, as mentioned elsewhere in this discussion, is not available...
SWITCH: {
<cond 1> && do {
.
.
last SWITCH;
};
<cond 2> && do {
.
.
last SWITCH;
};
# default
.
.
}
...and I got this from this very portal :-)
A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
