After skimming through the thread, my idea is:
- Generate a density gradient image with the clouds render in gimp/photoshop.
- Apply distortions for flavour.
- Save above as a macro so you can generate lots of distributions with one button press.
- Save as greyscale BMP
- For each pixel, convert it to a sample point if brightness > rand(1000)
Note: I presume you don't need an exact number of samples, but if you do, just shuffle the list and then pick the first N.
EG:

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
