I too chose to learn XML::LibXML and XPaths a couple of years ago to solve a problem. Despite the learning curve, it is paid off and I have used them on many projects since then.

The documentation isn't very good, but I found this useful cheat sheet which I use often: http://refcards.com/docs/forda/perl-xml-libxml/perl-xml-libxml-refcard-a4.pdf
